SugarCRM 5.1 and ZuckerReports: What Almost Nobody Wants You to Know 9 September 2008

In one of my current projects, I was tasked to create modules for SugarCRM 5.1 CE using Module Builder and needing to generate reports, the only available option I found was ZuckerReports. I downloaded ZuckerReports 1.9 beta and wrestled with it trying to make it work, literally for days without positive results.

For background of my setup, my SugarCRM 5.1 CE installation which was setup on an Ubuntu 8.04LTS has the following MySQL database connection configuration initially:

  • Hostname: localhost
  • Username: root
  • Password: password
  • Database: sugarcrm51

I was able to install Java 1.6 SDK (otherwise it won't work), and iReport for generating JRXML files for JasperReports which is the 'secret sauce' for generating Portable Document Format (PDF) and Microsoft Excel (XLS) reports formats.

Neri tamil meaning hindi. Need to translate 'நெறி' (Neṟi) from Tamil? Here are 2 possible meanings.

For the network configuration of my setup, it's connected to my office LAN with IP 10.100.2.103.

Initially, iReport also doesn't seem to work, it can't connect to the MySQL backend database of SugarCRM following the setup paramaters above, so I changed the MySQL setup to add 10.100.2.103 as one of the trusted IP addresses to listen on.

When I applied the same changes to iReport, it worked and I was able to generate preview of report using live database data. Next, I changed the SugarCRM database connection configuration (yes, I know that's quite a mouthfull of technobabble) to be like this:

  • Hostname: 10.100.2.103
  • Username: root
  • Password: password
  • Database: sugarcrm51

And sure enough, ZuckerReports generated PDF and XLS reports on the fly using the generated JRXML files from iReport.
